Nursery Curriculum

A Nurturing, Child-Led Approach to Early Years Learning

At Tower Tots Nursery, we believe that every child is unique — and so is their learning journey. That’s why our curriculum is shaped by the children themselves. Their interests, discoveries and fascinations guide us in how we support their development from the very start.

We aim to provide each child with the foundations they need to grow into confident, resilient and curious learners. Whether they’re 3 months or 5 years old, every moment spent at Tower Tots is an opportunity to explore, develop and thrive in a safe, stimulating environment.

What Guides Our Curriculum?

Our nursery follows the Statutory Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework (2024) and uses Development Matters to support planning and assessment. These frameworks help ensure that children develop key skills across seven areas of learning, while also giving us the freedom to adapt our approach to meet the needs of every individual.

We place particular focus on the three prime areas of learning, which are especially important for the youngest children:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

These are nurtured daily through play, interaction, and meaningful routines.

Learning Through Celebration and Experience

Throughout the year, we offer a wide range of sensory, cultural and community-based experiences to enrich your child’s development. These include:

  • Food tasting and shared meals
  • Dressing up and exploring world festivals
  • Music, movement and dancing
  • Storytelling and book-based activities
  • Visitors from the local community

These experiences help children build confidence, learn about the world around them and enjoy being part of a wider community. Many of these moments are captured through online journals, room displays and photographs for families to enjoy.

Our In-the-Moment Planning Approach

At Tower Tots, we use a responsive model of planning known as “in-the-moment planning.” This means our staff observe what captures your child’s interest in real time, step in to support or extend the learning, and then document what happened afterwards.

There are three key steps:

  • The child’s spark — when a child shows a deep interest or fascination in something.
  • The teachable moment — staff join the child, offering support, questions or resources to enhance the experience.
  • The documentation — later, we record the moment to help build a bigger picture of your child’s learning journey and inform future planning.

This approach allows learning to happen naturally and spontaneously — led by the child and guided by the adult.

A Carefully Designed Learning Environment

We believe that the nursery environment plays a key role in how children learn. Our spaces are set up to encourage exploration, independence and creativity. Children have access to areas for sensory play, small-world roleplay, construction, books, mark-making and much more.

We regularly review our environments to make sure they are meeting the evolving needs and interests of the children in our care. This helps us ensure that all areas of the EYFS curriculum are covered through open-ended, child-led activity.

Our core provision is designed to be varied and engaging, with gentle routines to provide structure, and flexibility to allow children to follow their own path.
