Pastoral Care

Supporting the Whole Child at Every Stage

At Tower College, pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that a happy, supported child is a child who can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. From Preschool through to GCSE, we are committed to nurturing each pupil as an individual, providing the care and guidance they need to grow into confident, compassionate and resilient young people.

Our school’s ethos is built on strong values — respect, kindness, responsibility and integrity — and these principles shape every interaction. We place equal emphasis on academic success and personal wellbeing, ensuring that every child feels safe, valued and heard.

A Whole-School Approach

Pastoral care is not the responsibility of one department — it is a shared commitment across the entire school community. All staff are trained to identify and support pupils’ wellbeing, and we maintain excellent communication between families, teachers and the leadership team.

Each key stage has its own structured support network:

Early Years and Lower School

In the younger years, pastoral care begins with close relationships between pupils and their class teachers. Children are supported in developing self-awareness, empathy and confidence. A nurturing, structured routine helps create a strong sense of security, while circle time, kindness initiatives and daily check-ins promote emotional literacy.

Middle and Upper School

As pupils progress into the senior years, they benefit from a more structured pastoral system. Each pupil is assigned a dedicated form tutor who serves as their first point of contact for wellbeing and guidance. Form tutors monitor academic progress, attendance and personal development.

Our senior pupils are also encouraged to take responsibility for themselves and others through peer mentoring and prefect roles.

Emotional and Mental Wellbeing

Tower College is committed to promoting positive mental health. We provide a range of support options for pupils who may need additional help, including:

  • One-to-one support from pastoral leads
  • Workshops and PSHE sessions on resilience, relationships and emotional wellbeing
  • Partnerships with parents to support behaviour, anxiety and transition

Our small class sizes and close-knit community mean pupils are well known to staff, and any concerns can be addressed quickly and with care.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is a top priority at Tower College. We have clear policies and procedures in place to ensure all pupils are protected from harm. All staff receive regular safeguarding training and updates. Our Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) are always available to respond to any concerns raised by pupils, staff or parents.

We encourage an open-door policy and promote a culture where pupils feel safe to speak up.

A Culture of Respect and Kindness

Our values-based education supports children in developing character and confidence. From anti-bullying campaigns and peer support to community initiatives and charitable work, pupils are encouraged to be active, kind and thoughtful members of the school and the wider world.

Working in Partnership With Parents

We believe the best pastoral support happens when school and home work in partnership. We maintain open lines of communication with parents and carers, and we welcome their input. Whether through informal conversations, parent meetings, or collaborative support plans, we are committed to working together in the best interests of every child.
