Lower School Maths

At Tower College, Mathematics is taught daily through the Teaching for Mastery approach, which lies at the heart of all our lessons and activities. This research-based method places a strong emphasis on developing a deep, secure understanding of mathematical concepts, rather than focusing on simply following a given process.

Our aim is to ensure that children fully understand the mathematics behind the maths processes, enabling them to apply their knowledge confidently and flexibly when approaching more complex problems. By encouraging pupils to explore, explain and justify their reasoning, we support them in building a lasting, transferable understanding of key mathematical ideas.

In addition to the main daily maths lesson, children take part in short daily fluency sessions. These are designed to reinforce number facts, methods and mental strategies, helping pupils to develop speed, accuracy and confidence in their calculations.

To further support fluent recall of key facts, children are encouraged to regularly use Numbots and TT Rockstars as part of their weekly homework. These engaging platforms help build automaticity in essential number knowledge, including number bonds and multiplication tables. More information can be found on their websites.

At the end of each term, children complete standardised assessments in maths. These provide clear, consistent feedback on progress and attainment, giving parents a reliable overview of their child’s development across the year.

Through our mastery-led approach, we aim to cultivate confident, inquisitive mathematicians with the skills and understanding to succeed both in school and beyond.
