RAIN FREE

What a great day we had at Wigan.  The sun was shining for the first time in several years and it definitely brought out the best in people.  We certainly have plenty to celebrate at Tower College and it wasn’t just the sport and the sun that shone.

TOTAL COMMITMENT

We were absolutely delighted with the commitment of the pupils who turned out for their respective houses.  Events were full and absent pupils were substituted with the minimum of fuss.  Pupils were proud to participate, regardless of whether or not they had any chance of winning.  I think it is fair to say that if our young people have this positive attitude at sports day, they are already winners in life.

It was joyous to watch pupils cheer each other on; friends, team mates or rivals – it didn’t really matter who.  Handshakes at the end of races and events were common to show a real display of sportsmanship and respect.  A gesture often lost in today’s selfish society.

ADAM AND MEGAN HURDLE TO VICTORY

It goes without saying that there were clear victors and there were some supremely confident and competent performances from all our pupils.  We were delighted with the introduction of the hurdles events into the senior programme.  Adam Glynn gave a master class in how to hurdle and Megan Gilbert seemed to glide effortlessly over the 8 barriers.  The tug-of-war event is always a crowd-pleaser.

SKILLS IN ABUNDANCE

This year both our Junior and Senior battles were ferociously contested in one of the best competitions we have witnessed.  The winning House, Merlewood, along with Cholerton, Baxter and Alexander displayed a high degree of skill in their teamwork, strength, willpower, determination and cooperation; the very skills necessary in many of our adult workplaces.  Sprinting prowess was on display through many pupils:  Sebastian Newman showed style, Katie Dinsdale flew, and Georgia Sheerin was simply outstanding.

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS

Our KG and Nursery pupils were delightful.  They responded beautifully to the occasion and embraced the opportunities to perform at  the big stadium.  How many under six year olds would have the confidence to do that?  Abinaya in KG1 was superb.  What potential she has.  Tomas Alam showed his competitive spirit in all he undertook.  Shriya Bharti completed every event with an enormous grin on her face.  These are memories our pupils will always cherish.

S4 - OUR BEACON OF LIGHT

Our S4 pupils were outstanding in taking responsibility, showing initiative and becoming chaperones for the day.  It was hugely reassuring that whenever a job needed doing, they were there to do it.  They didn’t need to be asked, it all happened as if by magic.  It bodes well that we could have some of the best prefects we have ever had if these young people adapt to their duties within school as well as they did at Wigan.  They certainly deserve our praise and thanks for such considerate and efficient services.  It didn’t go unnoticed that some of our S3 pupils mingled into the jobs.  Perhaps they are in early training for next year.  They too were brilliant.

A TRULY GREAT MOMENT

A very special event occurred for the very first time in 2010.  It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end to watch a very gifted young lady abandon her quest for first place to shepherd her friend around a gruelling 800m event.  They started the race together, they stayed together and they finished together.  We were equally proud of both our pupils but for very different reasons.  One for entering the race with no chance of winning but determined to complete a difficult activity and the second for showing compassion, support and a degree of altruism  when it truly mattered.  There is a lesson for us all in this singular act.  And it is what often defines the essence of Tower College.
